LatAm: HP Boosts Gap With Dell 

HP has widened its lead over Dell in Latin America. Meanwhile, Positivo Informatica has captured the number two spot overall.

A strong channel network throughout Latin America - and continued strong economic growth regionwide - helped widen Hewlett-Packard's lead over Dell in the region.  HP sold 854,893 PC's in Latin America in the second quarter, a 76.9 percent increase from the same period last year, according to market research firm Gartner.

Dell sold 379,350 PC's in the second quarter, which was 9.4 percent better than a year earlier. However, HP's market share jumped from 11.9 percent to 15.2 percent, while Dell's fell from 8.5 percent to 6.8 percent, according to Gartner.

"Dell doesn't have a strong presence in the consumer market," says Luis Anavitarte, vice president and research director for Gartner's Latin American research. "They're mostly on the business side. ...Their lack of presence is clearly a handicap for Dell and a strong point for a vendor like...
