PC Sales: Dell Recaptures Second Spot

Dell grows, but market leader HP continues to widen its gap. Brazil's growth has now made it the world's fifth-largest PC market.

U.S.-based Dell, the world's second-largest PC producer, recaptured the number two spot in Latin America thanks to strong sales in the third quarter, according to Gartner. Dell's Latin America market share now stands at 7.2 percent, an improvement from the 6.8 percent in the second quarter.

U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest PC producer, remains the market leader in Latin America. Its market share in the third quarter reached 15.6 percent, a slight improvement from the 15.2 percent in the second quarter.

FINANCIAL ACCESS GROWS

All in all, a total of 6.4 million PC's were shipped in Latin America in the third quarter, a 34.4 percent increase from last year. That's more than double the worldwide growth rate of 14.4 percent.

It also represents a 13.1 percent increase from second quarter sales in Latin America, according to a Latin Business Chronicle analysis of Gartner data for the last two quarters. Growing access to financial resources through retail...
