MEXICO CITY — The heart of Mexico's computer retail market lies not in the glitzy malls that ring the nation's capital but in a rabbit warren of shopping arcades in the city's bustling historic center. In Mexico City and throughout the nation, white boxes assembled by stallholders or in small workshops account for 40 percent of computer sales much more than any brand of machine.
Yet the proportion is dropping, says Luis Anavitarte, a research vice president with Gartner Consulting and author of a recent study of the Latin American market in computers. Anavitarte reckons that some 3 million computers were sold in Mexico in the first three quarters of last year, up from 2.75 million in the same period of 2006 -- despite a freeze on government purchases.
