SÃO PAULO – Esch Café is a cigar club in the posh Jardins district in São Paulo. It is typically the kind of island of peace where hard working paulistanos like to chill out around a glass of wine. Its frequent customers include Antonio Ferreira Pinto, the state of São Paulo’s security secretary. Yet, this did not deter a gang from attacking the bar in broad daylight at the beginning of the year and stealing a pair of expensive watches and a few mobile phones.
