Multilatinas: Alfa Leads Growth

Alfa gets a boost from its US petrochemical purchases as well as strong growth in other units.

Mexican industrial conglomerate Alfa led the way in growth among multilatinas last year, according to the the Multilatina Index from Latin Business Chronicle, which measures the quarterly and yearly performance of 25 multilatinas.

Sales at Petrobras, Latin America’s largest company, underperformed the index last year, but outperformed in the fourth quarter.

All in all, the index advanced 7 percent last year and 4.7 percent in the fourth quarter.

Alfa’s revenues jumped 36.7 percent last year to $14.7 billion. In the fourth quarter, Alfa revenues grew 21.7 percent, marking the second-highest increase on the index.

“Our year-on-year results show the positive impact of the various strategic initiatives we undertook during the year,” Alfa President Alvaro Fernandez, said in a fourth quarter statement.
